Shingles Vaccine (Zostavax)

Shingles Vaccine (Zostavax)

The Pomperaug District Department of Health is offering the shingles vaccination Zostavax┬« (pronounced “ZOS-tah-vax”) at its weekly vaccination clinics. The vaccination clinics are held every Tuesday at the Health District office, Playhouse Corner, 77 Main Street North in Southbury. Appointments are required.

People 60 years of age or older should get shingles vaccine. They should get the vaccine whether or not they recall having had chickenpox, which is caused by the same virus as shingles. Shingles can be painful and can cause serious problems such as long-term nerve pain. Studies show that more than 99% of Americans aged 40 and older have had chickenpox, even if they don’t remember getting the disease. There is no maximum age for getting shingles vaccine. Even if you have had shingles, you can still receive shingles vaccine to help prevent future occurrences of the disease.

The cost for the vaccine is $220.00, payable by cash, check or credit card. People should check with their health insurance to see if it a covered benefit in order to submit a claim for reimbursement. The Health District accepts Medicare Part D for the Shingles vaccine which may lower the cost significantly for those insured.
